Schwarzwald Cake

German confectioner Josef Keller claims to have invented the Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder) in 1915 in the prominent Café Agner in Bad Godesberg. Another version goes that the inventor was the confectioner Erwin Hildenbrand of Tübingen. One way or another, the combination of cherries, whipped cream, and cherry sauce was known in the Black Forest region back in the 19th century, not as a cake but as a dessert. In 1934 the recipe was published for the first time, and the cake quickly gained popularity. It remains one of the most famous and beloved German cakes.
